Five-star hotel management dream realised

marco pierre white visits Le Cordon Bleu

A Bachelor of Business (International Hotel Management) from Le Cordon Bleu Adelaide opened doors to an impressive management career in 5-star hotels for Rebecca Yu who is proud to work as Area Assistant Commercial Director at Hilton Darwin.

With only 8 years since graduation, Rebecca’s career has moved forward at an impressive rate, working for luxury hotels in roles such as Senior Sales Manager at Melia Hotels International (in charge of ‘MICE’: meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions); Sales Manager (MICE) at Hilton London; and Sales Specialist (MICE) at Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide.

Today, Rebecca is a business development specialist after working through the ranks in order to learn all aspects of the hotel business. “To avoid being limited to operational roles, I set out to learn the business inside out.” Rebecca cites her role as Sales Manager for Hilton London as a career highlight, saying she travelled 200 days per year and loved it!

The choice of a hospitality career came naturally, as Rebecca’s family own restaurants in Hong Kong and China and were keen for her to work in the industry. Luckily, Rebecca was passionate about the idea of running hotels, but she wanted to study an industry-specific management degree and chose Le Cordon Bleu Adelaide.

The global reputation of Le Cordon Bleu influenced her decision and she has since discovered that the Le Cordon Bleu brand does open doors for graduates in industry. “After graduating from Le Cordon Bleu I was ready to go after what I wanted, I felt confident to take on responsibility as I could see the bigger picture.”

A Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placement during her studies landed her at the Adelaide Convention Centre in The Strathmore restaurant, where she enjoyed the experience of working in a fine dining environment.

Her advice to graduates is a message of perseverance.

“Strive to accept every opportunity that comes your way, as opportunity is only given when you’re ready, and you can work out your strengths on the job. Don’t be afraid if you don’t get what you want at the start of your career, work through the ranks and all those experiences will help you get what you want.”

The future looks bright for Rebecca Yu who is on track to achieving her ultimate dream of becoming a Regional Manager in a five-star establishment - with proficiency in five languages and a Le Cordon Bleu degree, Rebecca is set to work anywhere in the world!
