A round-the-world-trip of unusual wines

In our globalized era, the standardization of techniques and tastes seems inevitable. Yet a few wine-growers cultivate vines in improbable climates and terroirs, save forgotten or banished grape varieties, rediscover or create wines. Some even perpetuate methods used in Antiquity.

A few examples from around the globe: vinestock reaching 15 metres in height in Italy and Portugal, Quebec Ice Wine, heroic viticulture inscribed in Unesco’s World Heritage, wine from the Gobi desert, Indonesian cuvées from continuous harvesting, a Wine of Peace combining 600 grape varieties from all over the world, a harvest on 31 December, vines which listen to classical music, amphora wines from Georgia, a sparkling wine to disgorge yourself...

Notre expert : Pierrick Bourgault

In twenty years of research, Pierrick Bourgault has uncovered around fifty such curiosities that he explains with passion and skilful teaching. Eight unexpected elements are outlined: climate, terroir, grape variety, working with vines, vinification, colour, ageing and container.

Journalist, photographer, agricultural engineer, Pierrick Bourgault has produced a number of reports on rural societies, food and wine from around the globe. Winner of the Afja agricultural journalism Grand Prix, he is the author of around thirty works, guides, essays, art books and literary texts.
