August 2009

Age: 23
Nationality: Malaysian
Qualification: Le Cordon Bleu Bachelor of Business – International Hotel Management
Job title: Concierge
Employer: Hilton International, Adelaide, South Australia
Inspiration: “Conrad Hilton is my biggest inspiration because he said “successful people make mistakes, but they won’t give up on their dream”
My Course: “The two and half year management course I did at Le Cordon Bleu was lots of hard work with an intensive study schedule, but it was the greatest study experience I have ever had. From the basic, practical studies in Year 1, then stepping up to management studies in Year 2 and 3, all studies were related and useful to my current job”
My job: “The main part of my job deals with responding to guest enquiries. I have to know what’s new in the city, tourist information and attractions, dining and entertainment and dealing with luggage and cars”
The best parts and worst parts about my job: “The great thing about this job is meeting different groups of people...I feel everyday is a new challenge. The worst thing in this industry is the high turnover of staff. I remember working in the Sheraton Mirage, Port Douglas where colleagues got to know each other. However, after a few months, everyone was heading to different places – for their studies, work or even travel”
My advice: “Paper qualification are a must in this industry. People think they can get a job without any qualification, however, once you get to management level, a paper qualification is vitally important. Be prepared for the industry – that is, be ready to work a variety of shifts, to deal with customer complaints and demanding guests. One has to have a “can do” attitude, positive thinking and socialising skills are essential ”
