Chef Julie Walsh judges at the National Chef of the Year Final

On Tuesday 7th October, the Craft Guild of Chefs hosted the final of the 2014 National Chef of the Year Competition at the Restaurant Show in Earl’s Court, London. Chef Julie Walsh, alongside Le Cordon Bleu Grand Diplôme® alumna Hideko Kawa, was in charge of judging the dessert category of the prestigious competition.

The eight finalists had been selected following the semi-final heats that took place at Sheffield City College on 10th June and Le Cordon Bleu in London on 25th June.

The participants had two hours to prepare three dishes:

  • a starter made of fish or shellfish
  • a main composed of a  specific meat that was part of a mystery basket sent two weeks before the final to each candidate
  • a dessert prepared with chocolate

The judging panel for the competition was chaired by Clare Smyth & Phil Howard and brought together some of the most talented Chefs in the United Kingdom:  Jason Atherton,  Marcus Wareing, Tom Kerridge, Brett Graham, Monica Galetti, Bruce Poole, Marcus Wareing, Hideko Kawa, Julie Walsh, Hayden Groves.

Chef  Russell Bateman from the Grove Hotel has been awarded the title of 2014  National Chef of the Year

  • Adam Handling, head chef, St Ermins Hotel, London
  • Andrew Gotting, executive group head chef, Galloping Gourmet, Worcestershire
  • Daniel Morgan, sous chef, The Square, London
  • Diane Kay, development chef, Reynolds, Hertfordshire
  • Lahiru Jayasekara, head chef, The Manor at Weston on the Green, Oxfordshire
  • Nick Edgar, head chef, Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons, Oxfordshire
  • Simon Webb, head chef, CH&Co, London
