Diploma in Wine, Gastronomy and Management students visit to Gusbourne Estates
Gusbourne Estates
Diploma in Wine, Gastronomy and Management students travelled to Kent to visit one of the most ancient and renowned wineries in the UK: Gusbourne Estates.

Gusbourne Estates has become a standard-bearer of high quality English wines. Awarded English Wine Producer of the Year in 2013 by the IWSC, the wines keep on going from strength to strength.

Le Cordon Bleu students were welcome by Charlie Holland, the winemaker. The visit started in the vineyard. The estate sits on the low slopes of the ancient Kentish escarpment at Appledore. The extensive two hundred hectare Estate is on a single site with twenty hectares under vine cultivation with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes.

Charlie Holland, then invited everyone to the winery to describe the different steps of winemaking process, as well as explain the estate’s own winemaking approach where time and patience are key in the quality of their wine with a long period of prolonged lees ageing.

Finally the visit ended with the tasting of 5 wines: three sparkling and two still wines. Students tasted all wines and had the opportunity to discuss the wines with the winemaker.

Master Sommelier Matthieu Longuere commented on the visit he organised “It was important for our students to understand the process behind quality wines as well as the marketing and commercial approaches. Visiting Gusbourne Estates was also a real opportunity to visit a high-end English vineyards and meet one of the most respected winemakers in the UK.”

Overseen by Master Sommelier Matthieu Longuere, Diploma in Wine Gastronomy and Management has been designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to succeed in the wine and spirits industries at international level.

Applications are now open.
