Anna Schena, Diploma in Wine, Gastronomy and Management Alumna
From Diploma in Wine, Gastronomy and Management to Fine Wine Analyst

This week we catch up with Anna Schena, who graduated from our Diploma in Wine, Gastronomy and Management earlier in the year to discuss her best memories from the course.

Anna worked as a credit analyst covering the European banking sector for a leading investment bank for five years, before deciding that it was time for a career change. Since leaving Le Cordon Bleu London in March, she has settled at a bespoke fine wine advisory and management company, Eighty-Two in central London and is responsible for fine wine market analytics and insights.

Q: Why did you choose to enrol for Le Cordon Bleu London’s Diploma in Wine, Gastronomy and Management?

A: I did some WSET courses alongside my previous job, but when I decided I needed a full change in career I became more serious about my next move and came to Le Cordon Bleu London due to its reputation.

Q: What was your biggest learning curve throughout the course?

A: I would have to say blind tasting- I wasn’t used to talking about wine but now I can talk about it with confidence.

Q: Did the course improve your confidence when talking to winemakers and other wine professionals?

A: Absolutely, I soon understood what they are doing so I could constructively contribute to their conversations. It also helps that they don’t have to speak in basic terms with me anymore. Each time I have a conversation with them, it just gets better and more in depth.

Q: What has been your main highlight of the course/ best memory?

A: It has to be the last visit to the Gusbourne Vineyard, the atmosphere was great and the wine maker came with us. Ultimately it was the best school trip ever!

Q: During your course, did you meet a wine professional that inspired you?

A:  I did - a wine merchant that specialises in small artisan producers. I drink so much of their wine now thanks to him. He was just one of the most passionate people I have ever met.

Q: Any pieces of advice that you would like to pass on to future or perspective students?

A: Drink! Try as many wines as you can and keep an open mind. I’m from Verona in Italy, so I grew up thinking wines from France were exotic! So trying wine from Georgia is amazing.

Q: How long after completing the Diploma did you secure your job?

A: I found my job straight after the end of the course, I was very lucky.

Q: Do you think the knowledge you gained from the Diploma in Wine, Gastronomy and Management helps you in your day- to- day role?

A: Definitely, it gave me a solid foundation in the most important aspects of the wine industry. I build on what Matthieu taught us a little bit more every day!
