About Chef John Horton

Executive Chef John Horton joined ARAMARK CANADA LTD at Carleton University in September 22 2008, with over 30 years of cooking experience. Before joining ARAMARK Chef John worked for 17 years as the Executive Sous Chef for Cara Operations Airline division which included him cooking for the prime minister, president of the US and the Queen of England.

Chef John grew up in the small town of Brockville, on a farm of both vegetables and livestock so fresh product was never far from the table. His mother who was an excellent cook was his inspiration to branch out into the culinary world which led him to work under the Late Stuart Cuthbert a well know restaurateur in the area.

Chef John’s Career has brought him from a 5 star restaurant, apprenticing, managing, to working large production kitchens. He trained under Chef Bruce Laird in his early days working at the Town Haus, where he later became the manager. Two years ago he made the decision to take on a bigger challenge and accepted the position of Executive Chef at ARAMARK CANADA Ltd. at Carleton University, which he considers his biggest honor to date.

Things you might not know about Chef John; he opened up the Ottawa Flight kitchen (Cara foods Airline Divison) in 1991 from the ground up, and wild game is one of his passions when it comes to cooking along with being an avid outdoors person.

His message to aspiring chefs:
“Attend a good culinary school, use all your culinary resources, follow the latest food trends, and find a chef as a mentor who inspires you.”

Please RSVP to Andrea Larabie at Student Services if you would like to attend.
