A voyage of discovery in the Rhone Valley vineyards with the Wine and Management students
As part of the Wine and Management diploma, students go on a number of educational trips to French vineyards. We accompanied them during one such visit to the Rhone Valley, with Franck Ramage, Head of the Wine Department
Day 1 - Châteauneuf du Pape - selective production in order to achieve excellence
The students began their visit on a bright and sunny morning at the "Domaine de la Janasse" in Courthezon. Founded in 1973 by Aimé Sabon, this family run business of more than fifty hectares spread over sixty parcels of land, produces excellent wines that respect the terroir and the environment. A tasting in the courtyard allowed the group to discover a large selection of crus: Vins de Pays, Côtes du Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Following an educational lunch accompanied by superb Châteauneuf crus (Rayas, Vieux Télégraphe) at «La Table de Sorgues », the visit continued at the Château de Beaucastel in the heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape country. Formerly reputed for its olive plantation, the business was taken over by the Perrin family in 1909 who went on to plant the first vines; today there are more than 100 hectares. Each Beaucastel vintage reveals an outstanding wine that has been made by respecting nature through biodynamic agriculture and by making the most of a unique microclimate. The students were given a tour of the vineyard, which is renowned for its rounded stones (a soil type which is typical of Châteauneuf-du-Pape), before tasting a number of the appellation's wines in the vineyard cellar.
The next stop was the Domaine de Marcoux where we were welcomed by Sophie and Catherine Armenier who are extremely passionate about wine making. They have been making organic wine that are elegant and fully respect the richness of the terroir, for over 20 years. The visit concluded with a tasting of Côtes du Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2010 and 2011.
The first day ended in the heart of the city of Avignon with a dinner which was full of the flavors of the south of France. Tapas and Rhone Valley wines were paired together to delight the taste buds.
