              Food & Wine Writing is a 12-week unit from the Le Cordon Bleu Master of Gastronomic Tourism programme, a collaboration between Southern Cross University and Le Cordon Bleu.  The unit can be studied as part of this programme, or as a single unit of study.

              Intakes: This unit is delivered in Session 1 commencing Monday 27 February 2017

              Duration: 12 weeks (Monday 27 February – Friday 26 May 2017)

              Delivery: This unit if offered entirely online using Southern Cross University’s MySCU virtual learning environment.

              Time requirements:
              15 hours per week

              Please note: To undertake the programme students must have fast and reliable internet access.

              Tuition fees: AUD$2,960

              A Certificate of Attainment will be issued for successful completion of this unit (if it is not studied as part of a higher award)

              Australian citizens may be eligible for FEE-Help.

              Australian citizens will also need to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF). Please see the Student Services and Amenities Fee webpage published by the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education for more detail.

              Students should also allocate funds for the cost of required textbook. Students must access the required text book in some way. Students from this programme can access the Gastronomic Tourism Library Guide for access to several titles.

                COM03422 Food & Wine Writing

                This unit develops your knowledge of and skills in food and wine writing. You will critically examine food and wine writing examples as models. This is done alongside reading of narrative theory. Exercises in the basic creative-writing strategies initiate your own practice, while the discussions of narrative theory underpin your practical application. The examination of genres in food and wine writing—such as fiction and creative nonfiction, or reviews and feature articles—demonstrates the range available for particular publishing contexts. Opportunities for publication available in a variety of media—for example, print or audio—are explored through matching writing strategies to the medium. The unit concludes with a consideration of the professional writer’s practice in the publishing industry.

                To apply for entry into the Masters, Graduate Diploma of Gastronomic Tourism or Graduate Certificate of Gastronomic Tourism or single units of study (like Food & Wine Writing) you must complete the application form, print and sign and return with your certified transcripts, certificates or other required documentation to australia@cordonbleu.edu

                If you possess an undergraduate degree you need to provide a certified copy of your degree transcripts with your application form. Applications from individuals without an undergraduate degree will also be considered based on relevant expertise and specialist experience. In order to qualify on this basis, you must show evidence of minimum five (5) years of work experience, including three (3) years professional/ managerial experience.

                Students wanting to apply on the basis of relevant expertise and specialist experience must supply (in addition to your application form):

                • A current resume/ CV
                • Two written professional references (that support the resume). These cannot be more than two years old. They do not necessarily need to be work references – they can be professional references. They are recommendations of your ability and commitment to undertake postgraduate level study.
                • We also recommend that you submit a statement of purpose (about 300-500 words) about why you would like to undertake this study and your ability and commitment to undertake postgraduate studies. This gives us great insight into our future students and their understanding of the programme.

                If you do not live in Australia please include a scanned copy of your passport with your application.

              • Who will I study with?

                Students currently studying in the programme come from varying academic, cultural and professional backgrounds, from IT to Law to Events to Cellar Door/ Wine and Tourism. We have students studying from across the world - from Japan, France, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, Singapore and Australia (as examples).

                Passion for food, wine and tourism is the cohesive factor. Individuals with internet access and a passion for gastronomy and food writing will be able to study from anywhere in the world, networking with like-minded individuals.

              • What Is Online Learning?

                All units from this program are offered entirely online through the Southern Cross University MySCU learning environment. MySCU is the one-stop portal to all your Unit Learning Sites, readings and assessments.

                Students will be supported by experienced teaching staff and will share in discussions relating to each topic. The MySCU portal includes unit learning sites and information sites where students can access resources, communication tools and useful links that are integral to their studies. Through the MySCU portal students use the web-based program Blackboard Collaborate – an advanced on-line learning environment for students and lecturers to communicate and collaborate through virtual meeting spaces and classrooms. They can share files, presentations, and applications. Lectures and tutorials may also be podcasted.

              • Information for International Students

                We welcome international students to join this Masters Program and share their different perspectives on gastronomic tourism. Lectures and tutorials are recorded and can be viewed at your convenience.

                English Language Proficiency

                Students applying from non-English speaking countries will need to show evidence of English Language Proficiency equivalent to:

                IELTS 6.5 - Masters

                IELTS 6.0 (no band score below 5.5) – Graduate Certificate

                Or have completed senior secondary study to the equivalent of the Australian year 12 or have completed at least one year of full time study (or equivalent part time study) at AQF certificate III equivalent or higher where the language of instruction was English. Some countries may be ineligible.  Check for the list of eligible countries.

                Canadian Citizens

                Canadian citizens studying this programme can request a Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) form T2202 for ‘Tuition fees – University outside Canada’ to complete as part of their tax return.

                American (US) Citizens

                Because the Le Cordon Bleu Master of Gastronomic Tourism program is delivered entirely online, students from this programme are not eligible for US Financial Aid.  To be eligible for US Financial Aid, a student cannot be enrolled in courses offered by online, telecommunication or distance delivery in whole or part.

                Also, the US GI Post 9-11 Bill that funds US veterans can only be utilized for on-campus study.  The United States Department of Veterans Affairs does not pay educational benefits for students at foreign schools for distance learning courses. Thus you will not receive funding to undertake the Le Cordon Bleu Master of Gastronomic Tourism.

                New Zealand Citizens

                New Zealand citizens are not eligible for Australian Commonwealth assistance (HELP loans) unless they are also Australian citizens or holders of a permanent visa.

                Note: Most New Zealand citizens who arrive in Australia are the holders of a temporary visa called a Special Category Visa (SCV). This is not a permanent visa.
